Exchange Bidding Setup – Part 2

Yield Group Setup

Quick Recap from Exchange Bidding Part 1, EBDA setup. The first article dealt with the complete setup of the Exchange Bidder networks and preparation for creating the Yield Group that will manage the exchange bidding.

This article will walk through creating the Yield group itself for Display Banners. By the end of these articles you should know everything you need to know about setting up EBDA inside your Ad Manager account.

The Yield group is actually an older feature of DFP, now Ad Manager. It was used originally to allow mediation between App Networks inside of DFP. It pulled bids from Facebook, AdMob and some smaller networks for Mobile apps bidding only. Today, the Yield group has evolved to allow you to create Exchange Bidding for a number of different ad formats.

Creating a Yield Group

Once you have your agreed to terms and have signed up with your EBDA enabled network, you are now ready to create a Yield Group. This Yield group can be a broad yield group that includes all the sites running in your Ad Manager or a specific Yield group, targeted to a sub-section of a site or a specific country’s users.

Clicking on Yield groups will bring you to the Yield group home page. Clicking on New yield group will start the process of creating your yield group.

The first thing you will need to decide is what ad format are you going to be targeting for Exchange Bidding. The type of ad format you choose does depend on which networks you have agreements with.

We will start with the basic case of running EBDA on your display banners. The screenshot above shows the other available ad formats for EBDA competition: Banner, Interstitial (Mobile App), Native, In-Stream video, and Rewarded.

The dropdown box will also appear after selecting Interstitial but currently the Interstitial EBDA is only available for Mobile Apps and it will be the only option available.

Targeting

Targeting the Yield group allows you to setup different yield groups based on all the criteria available in the other Ad Manager targeting sections.

Ad Size

The first attribute to target is the size of the ad unit. Here is the place to put in the ad sizes for the ad units you want running in the EBDA auction. Just type in the size and the list will show the options available for the size entered. However, this is not a necessary step. See the bottom line in small print:
If no size is specified, the yield group will match all sizes from the ad request.

Therefore, if the yield group is going to be running on all the different sizes running there is no reason to specify the ad sizes.

Inventory Targeting

The Yield group also offers the same type of targeting available for Line Items and many other Ad Manager features. These are the available targeting attributes:

  • Inventory – DFP Ad Units
  • Device category – Desktop, Smartphone, Tablet…
  • Device manufacturer -Apple, Samsung, Google …
  • Operating system – iOS, Android…
  • Geography – United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada…
  • Custom targeting – Key Values
  • Inventory URL – Any URL listed in your inventory list.

Following the selection of the correct targeting attributes, the ad networks can now be added.

Click on the Add yield partner button and another slide-in dialogue will appear.

Clicking on Select a yield partner will bring up a drop down of all the available ad networks that have EBDA. This will work properly if the networks were setup properly as shown in EBDA Part 1.

Adding Ad Networks

After selecting a network make sure to select Active and then click save.

To get started you only need to add one network in addition to Ad Exchange.

AdX will already be listed. However, we suggest using at least 2 EBDA ad networks to see the best results. To add additional Ad Networks just follow the above instructions again and again until you have added all your EBDA networks.

After you have all the ad networks added you should see the following

This shows the Ad Networks you have added in addition to AdX. Make sure that they are all Active and click Save.

Now you are all ready to watch as your Dynamic Allocation gets an added boost from Networks outside of Google!
