Freedom of Access to Information

Freedom of Access to Information

Access to information is a fundamental human right that is enshrined in international law. Along with freedom of speech and freedom of the press, freedom of information (FOI) is another pillar of democracy and one of the most important human rights included in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Society requires the receipt, analysis, and distribution of trustful information. The volume of data is gradually increasing. There is differentiation and specialization of it that may be of public interest and should be available to all the society members. Also, access to data is becoming one of the main tools for increasing the openness of the authorities. It informs society on what is happening and gives opportunities for analysis.

Democracy requires people to be able to participate in decision-making effectively and evaluate the performance of their government. Participation depends on access to a variety of information held by state institutions.

The mechanism of access to data is implemented through several laws and regulations. And the implementation of these laws depends on many factors. Among them: the availability of funds and well-trained human resources, the dynamism of civil society, NGOs and investigative journalists, etc.

Still, governments cannot often respond to FOI requests or proactively provide access to key categories of data. The public generally lacks awareness of their right to access public information and doesn’t know how to use their access to data.

Historical overview

In 1946, the UN General Assembly adopted Resolution 59 about the right to freedom of expression, an integral part of which is the freedom of information. It was also adopted in Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948. Other major international documents, such as the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights adopted in 1966 and the American Convention on Human Rights (1969) also included this part.

In many countries, there are constitutional guarantees of the right to access information. In addition, United Nations Sustainable Development Goal N16 target 10 is to ensure public access to information and protect fundamental freedoms to ensure accountability, inclusiveness, and fairness of institutions.

How can we get access to the information?

Nowadays, you can get the necessary data both offline and online. Earlier, in order to find out global news, you needed to buy a newspaper. Now it is enough to open your phone and find the required information. It will take you just a few clicks. The web offers data that is open to everyone. It is essential for ensuring democracy. Due to the Net, each person has access to a huge audience. So, they can transmit their informational material to it.

More and more people surf the web when they need to find some facts. In addition, many of them prefer to read newspapers and magazines online. Thus, many print media have already gone online and have their websites.

There doesn’t exist a question that is not directly or indirectly noted on the Net. And most of the data is available to the public. The main thing you need is to be able to search for the necessary data properly. There are no banns or restrictions. You can find anything you want. All you need is to have a good Internet connection.

A huge number of specialized thematic sites are on the web. They provide narrow knowledge to users. Due to them, the required and comprehensive information can be found in a matter of seconds. Yet, it is clear that crucial and valuable data will not be offered free of charge.

Why do we need to put up with ads to obtain information?

As the world has gone digital, the media have reduced their printed editions. Even though their main profit came precisely from the sale of these publications. Yet, by bringing everything online, they also made their subscriptions digital. Thus, now you can and read your favorite magazine on your preferred device without leaving your home.

However, there are some companies or website owners that are not so demanded. Yet, they also want to convey the necessary and verified information to the audience. And the only business model that works for them is ad-supported content. Of course, no one likes ads, but we can have access to good quality content due to it. Besides, publishers put so much effort into writing and delivering valuable data. They cannot do it for free. Ads are their main source of revenue, without which they won’t survive.

Good and bad ads

According to some research, consumers don’t just hate ads. They hate bad ads. Very often displayed ads are irrelevant and sometimes even absurd. Many users have hated ads so much that they are willing to pay to hide them. Most of these users are the representatives of wealthy youth. They are an important audience for advertisers.

People don’t really mind good ads. Well-placed and well-executed ads give users good product exposure. Due to them, they have some great customer experiences. One of the mistakes advertisers make is that they set the wrong target audience. Thus, completely unnecessary and boring advertising begins to annoy users. In contrast, they can be shown other relevant ones and continue happily using the website.

We like getting information very quickly. Yet we forget about a huge amount of work behind that. Many people work hard so that we can have access to quality content. And the only thing we need is to be patient with ads.

Very few publishers can successfully charge for their content. With Adnimation, publishers earn much higher ad revenue, empowering them to invest more in high-quality content, free for all.
